A system of moving figures—or vanishing trades.
- rurmus project -
An integral part of the Rurmus’s operation at the Lusatian Farmstead (Zagroda Łużycka) is a planned system of animated artisan figures depicting fifteen traditional trades. This installation expands upon the water mechanism’s function while simultaneously putting it to practical use.
The fundamental concept involves harnessing energy from the rotating waterwheel to power the moving mechanisms. This means the Rurmus does not operate merely as a standalone exhibit but serves as the power source for the entire system of artisan displays. Each trade will be represented by a pair of figures performing a specific task, resulting in an arrangement of dozens of figures working within a unified system.
The figures’ movements will replicate the actual actions performed in each respective craft. The mechanisms will rely on simple technical solutions, such as cams, levers, and motion transmission systems. This approach ensures clear, repeatable movements that are easily understood by the audience.
The installation is currently in the preparation phase and will be implemented as the next stage in the Lusatian Farmstead’s development. Its execution requires modifying the existing drive system and preparing dedicated stations for each trade.
At this stage, the system is not intended to be the final element of the water installation’s development. The Rurmus is viewed as the starting point of a broader system that will be expanded in future stages to include new water-utilization solutions.
Plans are in place to introduce additional systems demonstrating various ways of utilizing water. These will encompass both historical and contemporary solutions, fostering a better understanding of water’s role in everyday life. Anticipated developments include installations that demonstrate the water cycle, storage, and reuse. These systems will serve a demonstrative purpose and be designed to allow visitors to observe them in action.
A key aspect of the planned solutions will be demonstrating ways to conserve water. The installations will show how consumption can be reduced and how water can be used more efficiently. This topic is particularly relevant given contemporary challenges regarding access to water resources.
In this context, the *Rurmus* serves as a starting point, illustrating the fundamental mechanism of harnessing water energy. Subsequent installations will build upon this theme, showcasing various applications and possibilities.
For the Lusatian Farmstead (*Zagroda Łużycka*) as a whole, this entails creating a cohesive system with water at its core. From a simple water-lifting mechanism and the powering of moving figures to more complex installations, all elements will be interconnected.
The planned development of these installations also has an educational dimension. It will allow water to be presented not merely as a source of motive power, but also as a resource requiring conscious management. This approach will make it possible to link historical themes with contemporary issues.
